Originating from the miniature interiors of the private residences of Emperor Napoleon and King Maximilian I Joseph of Bavaria, the genre of interior scenes quickly gained immense popularity during the 19th century. These so-called "room paintings" continue to fascinate audiences today with their meticulous detail, offering a glimpse into domestic life of the time. The interior portraits reveal a complex interplay between traditional courtly representation and the more personal style of the late 19th century.

The depicted interiors constitute a historical testament to a material culture; at the same time, they were integrated into a culture of memory that characterized the Biedermeier period and was subsequently adopted by bourgeois culture. Before photography, they offered the only way to preserve a lasting memory of specific rooms and situations. The scenes, created using illusionistic techniques, are atmospheric and diverse. They are also an eloquent testament to the pictorial and graphic skill of the artists, among whom was the Berlin painter Eduard Gaertner (1801-1877).
