He worked as a criminologist in Barcelona until 1923. He published books of poetry and was President of the Ateneo Enciclopédico Popular in 1912. He collaborated with Joan Salvat Papasseit on Un Enemic del Poble and Teatre Català.In the 1920s, he began painting and criticizing art, working for the Galerías Dalmau. His publications extended to Madrid, La Coruña, and Mexico under the pseudonym Joan Pi.He held his first exhibition in 1928 and his first solo show in 1942. After the Civil War, he organized exhibitions in Paris.He was a founding member of the Salón de Octubre and President of the Círculo Mallol. He exhibited in important Barcelona galleries such as the Galería As and the Sala Gaspar. He is recognized for his style, which straddles modernism and the avant-garde, conveying mystery in his portraits. In 1962, he received the Juan Gris Painting Prize.
