About the Author

Manuel Duque (Nerva, Andalusia, 1919 - Sabadell, 1998) was an Andalusian artist based in Sabadell.

His father was a miner. He spent his childhood in Saint-Etienne, where his father worked in a local mine. When his father died of silicosis in 1941, the family settled in Sabadell, as one of Duque's sisters had married a man from Sabadell in France. Manuel Duque was then 22 years old and began working in various temporary jobs, until in 1943 he presented his first exhibition at the Academy of Fine Arts in Sabadell. In 1949 he took part in a collective exhibition organised by the same organisation and in 1953 he participated in the first edition of the Bienal de Bellas Artes Salon presented at the Caja de Ahorros de Sabadell. The following year he exhibited again alone, this time at the Cercle Sabadellès.

In 1954, he returned to France, where he was welcomed by Joan Vilacasas. In 1960 he returned temporarily to Sabadell, where he held an exhibition at the academy's Sala de Arte Actual, organised by Andreu Castells. He also took part in some of the actions of the Grup Gallot. He settled permanently in the city again in 1969, combining this with stays in Madrid. In the 1980s he devoted himself to teaching art in Sabadell, where he was influenced by the later generation of local artists, especially Ramiro Fernández and Oriol Vilapuig. In 2002, the Sabadell Art Museum dedicated a retrospective exhibition to him entitled Manuel Duque. The golden legend or I return it to a pictorial literature.

His work starts with Nuagism in the 1950s, evolving towards a vindication of thematic painting and series or variations, characteristics that he worked on until the end of the 1960s. The Sabadell Art Museum preserves works by this painter. (Source: Wikipedia)
