About the Author

Alexander Calder (July 22, 1898, Lawton, Pennsylvania – November 11, 1976, New York) was an American sculptor known for being the inventor of the mobile (hanging kinetic sculptures) and a precursor of kinetic sculpture.

Primarily recognized for his sculptures, he also created paintings, prints, miniatures (such as his famous Calder's Circus), scenery, jewellery, tapestries, carpets and political posters. Calder was honored by the United States Postal Service with a set of five 32-cent stamps in 1998. He also received the Presidential Medal of Freedom after refusing to receive it from Gerald Ford in protest of the Vietnam War, this medal received in 1977, a year after his death.

His most important work is the monumental "Floating Clouds" (1952-1953) in the Aula Magna of the Central University of Venezuela in Caracas. This work is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Calder's clouds were specially designed to combine art and technology, making the auditorium one of the five rooms with the best acoustics in the world.

An interesting and novel factor was sound, and he kept it in mind in his works, since his structures collided with each other. He also became interested in the shadows cast by his mobiles, as changeable as his piece itself, so he began to take care of the lighting in the exhibition spaces.
